SLAVERY is talked about often in the Bible.

Romans Chapter 6 says...
"But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.
You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness.
When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness.
What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!
But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
For those of us seeking recovery from Substance Abuse, the term slavery has personal meaning. Drugs and alcohol have enslaved us - either by our own misuse or by the misuse of a loved one.
We find ourselves enslaved by our habits, actions, and attitudes.
We try to change, and some of us find a brief reprieve, but eventually, we fall back into those destructive actions.
Defeated.
Dejected.
Once again, enslaved.
The good news is that there is FREEDOM!

In Luke 4:18 Jesus says:
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for He has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that THE OPPRESSED WOULD BE SET FREE,"

John 8:36
"So if the Son [Jesus] sets you free, you will be free indeed."

Slavery is solved by freedom.
How does this happen?
Overcoming substance abuse involves recognizing the truth (conviction), repenting (turning from sin and towards God), and replacing sinful habits with godly ones ('putting off' and 'putting on').

1 John 1:9
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

This transformative process means that the 'slave' is now 'free.'
A new creation in Christ!
